An Attempt by the STI to Match its Feat in 2006/2007

Since January this year, the STI has gone up for 7 straight months.

The one and only time since 1995 that the STI was up consecutively for at least 7 months was in 2006.   In that bull run, it went up for 8 consecutive months from June 2006 to January 2007 before it took a breather in February 2007.

If the STI chalks up another gain this month, it will equal the feat achieved in 2006/2007.   Will the STI be able to repeat the performance?

The figure below shows the charts that depict these two bull runs.

The chart at the top shows the bull run from June 2006 to January 2007 and the chart at the bottom from January 2017 to July 2017.

The table below shows the gains obtained by the STI for these 2 7-month periods.

PointsPercentage
Jun 2006 - Dec 2007
601.96
25.3%
Jan 2017 - Jul 2017
448.76
15.6%

From June 2006 to December 2006, the STI chalked up a gain of 601.96 points, whereas from January 2017 to July 2017, it gained less with 448.76 points.

In terms of percentage, the former case was also higher at 25.3% and the latter, 15.6%.

This shows that the bull run this year is smaller in magnitude compared to that of 2006/2007.

I went to the 51th Annual General Meeting of Public Bank Bhd

I went to Public Bank Bhd's 51th Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Shangri-La Hotel in Kuala Lumpur on 27 March.

I reached the Shangri-La Hotel at about 11:30am and quickly headed to the meeting room for registration.  Upon registration, I was given a souvenir item and a passcode slip.

The souvenir item comprised 2 bags.

The passcode slip is shown in the image below.

It was basically a ticket that allowed its holder to vote on the resolutions of the AGM.   It also served as a ticket for the exchange of a $50 Parkson Gift Voucher.

However, before you could claim your gift voucher, you had to cast your votes on the resolutions first.   The voting was scheduled to take place only after the AGM was over in the same meeting room that was used for registration.

When I came out of the registration room, there was already a long line of people at the foyer waiting to vote.

I joined the queue slightly after 12 pm and I took my position at the end of the line.

(These days, I don't bother to sit in on any of Public Bank Bhd's AGM any more.   I had done that a couple of times in previous years to know what it would be like.   There would be the usual praises, long story-telling before getting to the main question (eg. "I woke up at 4am this morning and went to the bus station to take the bus to ...") , AGM-irrelevant complaints and grouses (eg, "The ATM machine at this branch ..."), happy birthday greetings to the Chairman, etc.

One thing good about this AGM is that it always end on time at 12:30pm.   They are able to do this is because they first gather all the questions from the floor and then give the answers all at one go at the end.   It is unlike the ding-dong sessions practised at the AGM's of other companies at which the meetings can drag on for hours.)

After the meeting was over at about 12:30pm, they opened the doors to the meeting room and let the people in to vote.   It was slow moving as each time they allowed only about 30 persons in to vote.

At first, the queue was moving in an orderly manner.   Not long later, the people started to lose their patience.   Some began to cut queue by lifting the tapes that formed the queue boundaries and got to the other side of the boundary.   When others saw this, they did not want to lose out and quickly followed suit.   Many more followed with pushing and shoving.   Finally, all hell broke lose!

The security guards blew their whistles to try to control the crowd.   When the pushing subsided, I found myself ended close to the front of the queue.   Soon after, I was in the group that was allowed to go into the meeting room to vote.

I went to a table and a young girl was waiting with a tablet.   I voted 'Against' for all 4 resolutions.   I told the girl that the bank did not deserve a positive response to their resolutions with this poor organisation of the AGM.

On completion of the voting, I was given the $50 Parkson Gift Voucher.

When I came out of the meeting room, there was still a huge crowd outside waiting to vote.   I went upstairs to have some coffee before leaving.

I Went to the 47th Annual General Meeting of Dagang NeXchange Berhad

I went to Dagang NeXchange Berhad's 47th Annual General Meeting at the Nexus, Jalan Kerinchi, Bangsar South City, Kuala Lumpur on 2 May.

The meeting was scheduled to start at 10:00am.

I had wanted to take either Uber or Grab to go there.   I tried both Uber and Grab but there were no drivers.   Even when they upped the fare by more than 50% of the normal rate due to the high demand, there were still no takers.   So, I went out to take a public taxi.   At the taxi stand, there were a few empty cabs waiting for customers.

Due to the unavailability of Uber and Grab drivers, I was late for the meeting.   I reached the Nexus only at about 10:20am.   The taxi fare was about 50% higher than the normal Uber fare for the same journey.

I took the lift to Level 3 and proceeded to the meeting room for registration.

Upon registration, I was given 3 vouchers: 1 for door gift, another for breakfast and the last for lunch.

I claimed the door gift at a counter just opposite the registration counter.   I was given a carrier and inside it were a box of Tuzra fruit cake and a packet of Sherif teabags.   I exchanged my lunch voucher next for an envelope that contained 3 $10 KFC vouchers.   These are shown in the image below (the apple was part of the breakfast meal) :

I then went outside to the foyer.   Breakfast food was available there.   I had originally intended to sit in on the meeting, but I reckoned that I would have to miss the breakfast for that.   I decided to go for the breakfast instead.

To my surprise, they provided a lot of food for breakfast.   I had 2 plates full, as shown in the image below (including the apple shown in the image above):

I like the cookies and the fruit tart most.

This company is quite generous to shareholders at their AGM; providing breakfast, lunch vouchers and a door gift.   Most companies do not feed their shareholders so much.

While I was having my breakfast, a lady offered to exchange cash for my KFC vouchers ($23 for 3 x $10 vouchers).   I politely declined.

After breakfast, I decided to leave and left in a Grabcar.
